More sustainability in the to-go business with reusable tableware

Quality reusables instead of masses of waste.

"To go" has been a big topic in the food service industry since corona at the latest – but so has sustainability. How do takeaway business models and the associated waste production go hand in hand with environmentally conscious gastronomy? The biggest leverage lies in reusable to-go tableware.

As practical and popular as to-go gastronomy is, it brings with it a major environmental problem: plastic or cardboard cups, polystyrene boxes and plastic or paper bags are the standard packaging – and they are consumed in vast quantities. Not only the disposal, but also the production consumes resources. As society's awareness of sustainability continues to grow, more and more catering customers are realizing how harmful disposable packaging is to the environment.

Recyclable or biodegradable materials

One approach to reducing the ecological footprint of takeaway concepts is to use recycled, recyclable, or biodegradable packaging. For example, there are various plant-based materials that can be decomposed by microorganisms under certain conditions. They are often made from corn starch or sugar cane fibers. Although this makes disposal considerably easier, it is still disposable packaging that consumes resources for recycling and re-production.

The obvious solution: reusable crockery. Various restaurants are already encouraging their customers to bring their own cups and boxes, sometimes with discounts or other benefits.
